Duolingo Crashes, Yet the Stock Rises?

This Tuesday, the Duolingo (NASDAQ:DUOL) website crashed for several hours, which left tons of users unable to continue with their language courses.

Generally speaking, when something like this happens, it usually results in the affected company’s stocks dropping immediately. Yet, something different happened to this language-learning service.

Instead, its stocks rose by 10%. Now, what happened?

Nobody Can Take Down Duolingo’s Adorable Personality

According to reports, Duolingo started having issues by 10:30 a.m. ET. Having realized this, the company began to update their Twitter feed and the website’s home page. But not just any updates, mind you.

Aside from the usual “we’re aware of the issues” and “we’re working on a fix” reminders, Duolingo keeps adding some rather cute images of their mascot to accompany these messages.

These images included cartoons such as:

  • The Duolingo mascot protects the website with a small shield, while in a defensive pose.
  • And the Duolingo mascot painting. Alluding to the possibility that the site crashed because he was taking a break.

There was lots of panic coming from Duolingo’s customer base once this crisis started. Yet, these cartoons seemed adorable enough to calm their nerves just the right amount.

This can be evidenced by the number of people just laughing on Twitter. Most of these posts were always accompanied by small praise towards these cartoons. People’s love towards the Duolingo brand kick-started a stock increase just like that.

When considering the importance of having a solid reputation, it seems that Duolingo has it all covered, which means that we could see more growth like this sometime in the future.
